The Facts

Personal Safety of Young Women

Young women have unique and serious safety concerns, especially on campus. Statistically speaking, a young woman's time on campus is by far her most dangerous in terms of personal safety. Here some facts you should know:

  • 1 in 4 women report sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, or date rape during their college years
  • Women aged 16-22 are 350% more likely to be sexually assaulted than any other age group
  • A majority of sexual assaults happen off-campus
  • 75% of campus assaults are committed by known assailants

Riding in Cars with Friends

Your child is a smart driver. They have to be a smart passenger too. By no fault of their own they still have to deal with situations that impact their safety. Statistically speaking, nearly as many kids are hurt in the passenger seat as in the driver's seat. In addition to the statistics you already know, here are some you may not:

  • According to Allstate Insurance research, 67% of teens report having felt unsafe while someone else was driving. 45% said they would speak up if they felt scared.
  • Of those who said they would not speak up, among the most popular explanations of why was "the driver wouldn't listen to me anyway."
  • Allstate reports student-age drivers are 5x more likely to be in accident when there are 2 or more passengers in the car.
  • According to a 2005 CDC study, within the last 30 days, 28.5% of high school students nationwide report having to be a passenger of a driver who had been consuming alcohol.

See what students are saying themselves:

Have you been in these situations multiple times?
  • Passenger of an unsafe driver
  • Felt unsafe on a date, walking, or at a party
  • Wanted to go home early but your ride did not
  • Lost the friend that was driving you
If your parents gave you a prepaid taxicard, would you be more likely to take a taxi in a difficult transportation situation?
